Postal Service reminding customers to clear paths for letter carriers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you didn't get your mail this week, you may have yourself to blame.

The Post Service is reminding customers on walking routes that they need to make a clean path to their front door -- or if you have a box along the street, shovel out a big enough area for the delivery person to be able to reach it from their vehicle.

If the letter carrier can't easily deliver your mail, he or she has the right to pass you by.

"I know the plows come through, especially in the rural areas, and they're just throwing that snow and ice up against the mailboxes and it making it impossible to reach the receptacles," Postal Service spokesperson David Walton said. "But, you know, in some cases -- especially in the city -- if we can't reach them, we will try to park and take the mail up to the door."

Walton says about 20 percent of the mail isn't being delivered because people aren't clearing a path.
