LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - LMPD responded to the scene of a shooting at 26th and Chestnut Streets in the Russell neighborhood.

Police Chief Steve Conrad says a male in his 20s was shot by an LMPD officer during a narcotics investigation.

"The officers as is normally the case, will have their police powers suspended," Chief Conrad said, "They will be reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation."

Conrad said the man was shot in the chest and was in surgery. He is expected to be OK.

"I don't know whether it was a 911 call or it came through the non-emergency line but it was officers with our 1st division not assigned to any specific unit," Conrad said

It is unclear whether narcotics were found, but Conrad said a search warrant is being obtained to search the property.

"At this point, the other men are witnesses and being treated as such." Conrad said.

The incident happened in the stairwell of an apartment complex.

MetroSafe received the call of a shooting just before 1:45 p.m.
