Class hopes to Skype with Trimble Co. first grader awaiting heart transplant

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A class is learning more about their friend who is hospitalized.

Lacey Miller is waiting for a heart transplant at Kosair Children's Hospital. Her teacher says the first grader has a congenital heart defect.

Her class at Bedford Elementary School in Trimble County, Kentucky, set up a Skype session with her Tuesday afternoon. She's been gone since January and they miss her dearly.

But since Lacey didn't feel up to talking to the class today, a Kosair employee talked to the students about Lacey and how she's doing.

"When I visited her the first time, she was very ill," said Melissa Warren, Lacey's teacher. "So it's so exciting to hear that she's now riding a bike and doing art projects and things like that. She's making progress that, when I visited her, I didn't think was going to happen."

The students are making Lacey cards and pictures. Her family, doctors and nurses have encouraged the class to maintain this interaction to help boost her spirits.

The class is hoping to Skype with her once a week.
