LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Luhr Elementary School teacher Aggie Adwell was named the latest recipient of the Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership Award by Jefferson County Public Schools on Wednesday.

Adwell teaches fourth grade at the school, located on Fegenbush Lane. District officials, along with the award's sponsors – LG&E and WHAS-TV – presented Adwell with the award during a ceremony at the school. The award comes with a $1,000 instructional grant from LG&E.

“Aggie Adwell is a star among stars,” said Luhr principal Lynley Schroering, who added that Adwell's students consistently earn high scores on state science and writing tests and that “teachers at all grade levels rely on her when they have questions or need help.”

Adwell joined the Luhr staff as a kindergarten and first-grade teacher in 2001. She began teaching fourth graders the next school year and soon became known for both her dedication and her effectiveness in the classroom.

Fifth-grade teacher Elizabeth Adams says she has witnessed Adwell's "extensive planning, incomparable creativity and selfless dedication for many years."

"She addresses students with multiple learning styles and is aware of individual student needs, Adams said. "She is able to reach every child she instructs.”

Adwell earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in teaching at the University of Louisville.

The district's Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership (ExCEL) are awards that recognize exemplary teaching in JCPS. Two more teachers will be surprised with awards during the 2014-15 year.
