Man arrested in Floyd County for stealing multiple tractor trailers

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Detectives with the Floyd County Sheriff's Department say they have made an arrest in a major burglary operation.

"We're ending up with somewhere close to a half-million dollars in vehicles and property that has been stolen," said Floyd County Sheriff's Department Chief Wayne Kessinger in a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators believe a group of people conspired to steal a big rig truck and hook it up to multiple trailers in the hopes of selling the stolen items inside the trailers.

"What it appears they originally were doing we believe was they were stealing the heavy equipment, the trucks, and hooking it up to a tractor- trailer to take it and unload it,” Kessinger said.

William Robertson is in custody in Floyd County, but the sheriff's department believes more arrests are on the way.

"There are numerous other suspects still being investigated, we're still in the early stages of trying to tie this case together," Kessinger said.

According to the sheriff's department, the largest amount of items taken were shoes. Detectives say they believe between $300,000 and $400,000 worth of shoes were stolen.

"Some of these shoes we understand have been sold at flea markets, sold on the streets and we've recovered a sizable amount," Kessinger said.

Investigators believe there could be anywhere between two and five other suspects. They also say federal charges could be pending for Robertson.

"There is a very good possibility that there were a lot of cargo trailers that have gone missing in the past few years that could be associated with the same group," Kessinger added.
