State lawmakers meeting in Frankfort in an effort to pass a state heroin bill

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky lawmakers are meeting in Frankfort today in an effort to broker a deal to pass a state heroin bill.

Both the Republican Senate and the Democratic House agree something must be done to fight the growing heroin epidemic -- but the two sides can't agree on issues such as sentencing for heroin dealers and a program that allows addicts to exchange dirty needles for clean ones.

Senate President Stivers says if the conference committee can't reach a deal, lawmakers may pass a watered down version of the bill when they reconvene next week.

They would save the tougher issues for next year.
