NCAA Tournament success trickles down in community, businesses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With Louisville and Kentucky advancing in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, local stores are rolling in the profits on merchandise.

Don Duggins, a Cards Fan was out shopping Monday for some decals because he wants people to know he's a U of L fan.

"They always like the car flags. Everyone likes to show their team spirit around town," said JD Becker manager Hillary Bayens.

You might even find Cats fans shopping in the Cards section there.

"A shirt for my dad," Laura Hildenbrandt, a Cats fan, explained of her presence in the U of L section. "He's a U of L graduate so he's rooting for U of L."

The store will have special Sweet Sixteen tables set up for each team this week.

"Usually as soon as the games are over the phone starts ringing," Bayens said Monday morning. "We had phone calls last night and today."

Kentucky will play West Virginia in Cleveland on Thursday night and ticket packages are already sold out, though some are available from third parties online.

U of L will face North Carolina State University in Syracuse Friday night and season ticket holders with post season requests will be contacted soon.

"It means a lot for the locals," UK fan Ron Hilderbrandt said. "It's great for the community. The rivalry is great too."

Kentucky's undefeated season is a win for business and the store says depending on how far both teams go, this month could be bigger than sales for the Christmas season.

"Especially when they start playing each other which would be cool if they play each other in a national championship," Bayens said.
