Angel's Envy bourbon sold to Bacardi Limited

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Angel's Envy, the fast-growing premium Kentucky bourbon, has been acquired by Bermuda-based Bacardi Limited for an undisclosed price.

All operations of Angel's Share Brands and its subsidiary Louisville Distilling Co. will remain unchanged, and the planned Angel's Envy distillery across from Louisville Slugger Field is scheduled to open next year, according to a Bacardi news release.

Angel's Envy, which is finished in port wine casks, was created by the late Lincoln Henderson, the former master distiller at Louisville-based Brown-Forman Corp.

It's the first bourbon for Bacardi, a privately held family company known for its rum, vodka and gin brands.

"Bacardi looks for the gems of innovation in the spirits world to complement our premium and super-premium brands, and ANGEL'S ENVY is a natural fit for our portfolio," said Barry Kabalkin, vice chairman of Bacardi Limited, in the news release.

Jonathan Blue, a Louisville businessman whose private equity firm, Blue Equity, invested in Angel's Envy in 2013, said the sale is "great news for our city.

"Just look at what Bacardi did with Grey Goose (vodka)," Blue said Monday. "This will be fantastic because it will ensure the future of the brand, and all eyes will shine on Louisville especially now with what bourbon has become. It's such a gem for our city."

The move is meant to expose Barcadi to the strong-growing bourbon market, according to the release:

"The American straight category as a whole has experienced a resurgence in the past five years with a nearly five percent growth rate while the super-premium American straight segment has grown nearly 10 percent during the same time."
