ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police are stepping in after an Elizabethtown officer shot a man in the parking lot of  Kroger store Sunday.

That man, who has not yet been identified, later died from his injuries, according to a Kentucky State Police press release distributed Monday afternoon.

It was business as usual Monday at the Kroger on Dixie Avenue in Elizabethtown, but Kentucky State Police are now investigating.

Elizabethtown Police Officer Virgil Willoughby tells WDRB that one of their officers was called to the parking lot outside the store around 8 o'clock Sunday night on a complaint about a fight between a man and woman.

Willoughby says the officer who responded did not have a partner with him, but there were other officers in the area. He says the officer first spoke to a woman, who told him the man she was with had a gun. The officer then spoke to the suspect and saw that he had a gun. After exchanging words, the officer fired two shots.

"The officer, obviously, is very distraught, as would anybody in a situation like this," said Willoughby.

Witnesses tell Elizabethtown Police that the man had a gun in his hand. The suspect was taken by ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The investigation has been handed over to Kentucky State Police.

Police are expected to release more details about the shooting later today.
