LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police arrested a man Monday after they say he was involved in an injury crash with a school bus while driving while impaired.

It happened just after 4:30 p.m., near the intersection of Poplar Level Road and Naomi Drive.

Police say 21-year-old Richaardo A. Perez was at fault in the accident involving a school bus loaded with students. A witness told police that Perez ran two red lights and was driving at a high rate of speed when he hit the bus. There were multiple child injuries, according to the arrest report.

Perez allegedly smelled strongly of alcohol and marijuana, and there was an open bottle of Corona beer in the front console, according to the arrest report. Police say there was also marijuana in his right front pants pocket.

Perez had no vehicle insurance, according to police, and he was driving without a license.

After the accident, Perez allegedly tried to run away, but was chased down by bystanders and detained until police arrived.

He was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, no registration plates, failure to produce an insurance card, possession of marijuana, driving without an operators license and leaving the scene of an accident or failure to render aid or assistance.
