Renovated Funtown Mountain scheduled for June opening

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Funtown Mountain will open June 19, according to Will Russell, who bought the Cave City property formerly known as Guntown Mountain.

Russell plans to revamp the park to better reflect the Bluegrass State.

“Kentucky has got a lot to celebrate, so we want to elevate the reputation of Kentucky,” Russell said. “We want to celebrate our southern heritage, our southern culture, our southern arts and show the world we have a lot cooking here.”

Russell estimates the renovation will cost millions of dollars. He's counting on state support, private donors, crowd-funding and also plans to auction off his collectibles.

“Pretty much selling everything I got,” he said.

Russell says 25 jobs will be created this year and 100 more next year.

“That's exciting for the economy and the workforce and our young folks and our old folks,” said Cave City Mayor Dwayne Hatcher.

He compares the revitalization to a shot in the arm. “We're bursting at the seams with the possibility that it's going to revive our area,” said Hatcher.

In June, Russell says the lower level of the park will open. Visitors won't have access to the attractions on the mountain until construction is finished in the fall or early next year.

But to get buzz going now, Russell is taking the show on the road for a promotional tour. He plans to visit cities including Indianapolis, Nashville and Chicago. “This is about road trips, this is about America, this is about Kentucky,” he said.
