LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Firefighters were called to the scene of a building fire in east Louisville Thursday morning.

It happened shortly after 11 a.m., when crews rushed to the fire on Century Division Way, near I-64 and Cannons Lane.

The fire involved a gymnasium belonging to the U.S. Army Reserves. Witnesses said they heard what sounded like an explosion, and said that it appeared as if the building was struck by lightning.

"We heard an extra loud crash," said Robert Woodford, who works nearby. "Louder than typical lightning and we saw lightning across Cannons Lane, so we just took a peek out the garage doors and it was very clear that something more than just a lightning crash had occurred."

The building was empty at the time, and a fire department spokesman said it has been vacant for the past year. Only the exterior of the building was damaged, according to the spokesman.

The fire was later extinguished.
