Cleanup begins at Spencer Co. baseball field trashed by flood debris

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A Little League baseball field, trashed last week by flood debris, got some cleanup help Saturday morning.

People came out to Ray Jewell Memorial Park at 9 a.m. to begin the cleanup.

Even the Little Leaguers joined in to clean up their field.

Corn and tobacco stalks, dirt, leaves and other debris filled the dugouts and fences when floodwaters rose.

"We had I think eight inches of rain come down, and the floodwaters came up with a strong current," said Steven Hume, president of the Spencer County Youth Baseball Association.

"It ripped fences down, took equipment downstream ... We found stuff three miles up the creek. It destroyed the park, basically."

The flooding caused an estimated $60,000 of damage.

Hume said they made a lot of progress, adding that once they're done, it may even look better than before.
