Simmons College named to official list of historically black colleges

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Simmons College has officially been named to the country's list of historically black colleges, according to school officials.

The recognition, by the U.S. Department of Education, makes it only the second HBCU in Kentucky and also the oldest.

School President Dr. Kevin W Cosby tweeted the news Monday morning.

Schools apply through the department of education and go through a screening process -- one that has taken Simmons several years.

Simmons College, founded in 1865, is known as the birthplace of black higher education in Louisville. It recently became the only accredited private black college in Kentucky

When the school is added to the official register, it will be eligible to receive grants from the U.S. Department of Education specific to HBCUs.
