Clarksville judge wants to ban weapons at town hall

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Clarksville's new town court judge hopes to ban weapons from town hall.

Jimmie Guilfoyle took office Jan. 1 and says it's a safety move for everyone in the building.

He tells WDRB once Jeffersonville City Court closes this year, Clarksville town court will be the only court in the county without a weapons ban.

Right now, guns and other weapons are allowed and Guilfoyle says he's gotten some backlash about his new plan.

“I've had a lot of people talk to me about the political aspect of this - that it's a political tactic one way or another,” said Guilfoyle. “I may lose votes, I may gain them. It has nothing to do with that. If I suffer politically from this then so be it. This is the right thing to do.”

A metal detector could cost $5,000. Guilfoyle already spoke with town administrators about the plan and says he'll present his proposal again to council members next week.
