LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Convicted killer Dejuan Hammond was sentenced on Thursday for his role in the murder of a witness in his brother's murder trial.

Judge Angela McCormick Bisig sentenced him to a total of 35 years. A jury recommended 35 years for Hammond for murder and intimidating a witness

Victim Troya Sheckles was shot in March 2009 while sitting with a friend in Shelby Park.

That was just weeks after she agreed to testify against Hammond's brother, Lloyd, who was charged with killing Sheckles' boyfriend and two other men.

Two members of Sheckles' family addressed Hammond before the judge announced the sentence. They said the past six years have been long and hard on the family -- and added that Hammond appeared to be an intelligent man, but didn't use that intelligence for good, instead choosing to hurt their family.

Sheckles' cousin told Hammond that she blames him for Sheckles' death -- and that after Sheckles died, her mom was never the same. Calling Hammond "weak," "a coward" and a "manipulating killer," she said she felt sorry for him. She added that, while he's in prison, she hopes he reads the Bible and sees Sheckles and the bullets he put in her back.

Hammond himself rose at one point to speak to Sheckles' family. He said he hoped the "stones were rolled away" and that they "see the truth," ending with "God bless you."

Hammond has been in jail since 2011 and has other pending felony cases involving assault, wanton endangerment and drug charges.
