Disasters happen all the time, yet people are not very aware of them, unless they receive lots of national media attention. Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. In the past two months, your Red Cross has responded to heavy snowfall which resulted in flooding and mudslides, as well as heavy thunderstorms causing people to have to evacuate their homes.
Since March, your Red Cross has assisted over 800 people on their road to recovery, from storms and floods, providing shelter, food, emotional support, clean up supplies and identifying further long-term needs.
While these episodic disasters occur, your Red Cross responds to other everyday disasters, like home fires. We have responded to 1300 fires in the past year. Last year in Kentucky we had 58 deaths and over 900 injuries due to fires. We are joining forces with partners, like local fire departments to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires. This effort includes visiting neighbors door to door, installing smoke alarms and also giving preparedness tips like practicing fire drills at home with your family.
Our work is only possible through the generosity of the public. You can help make a difference in supporting these “hidden” disasters. Please consider making a financial gift to the Red Cross today by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or online at redcross.org. Any amount makes a difference to someone in their time of need.
