LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local fraternity chapter plans to host a candlelight vigil for a student who was shot to death near the University of Kentucky campus early Friday morning.

According to a news release, the Epsilon Omicron Chapter of Beta Theta Pi will hold the vigil in memory of Jonathan Krueger at the Newman Center at the University at 8 p.m. Friday.

Krueger, a junior in the College of Communication was killed while walking home in the area of Maxwell Street and Transylvania Park. Police were called to the scene around 3:30 a.m. on a report of shots fired. That's where police found Krueger in the road suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. We're told the Krueger was with a friend when they were confronted by at least one person just before Krueger was shot.

One suspect, 18-year-old Justin D. Smith, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting, according to a news release. Police say they are looking for other possible suspects.

On Friday afternoon, the Epsilon Omicron Chapter of Beta Theta Pi sent out the following written statement.

This morning, the world lost an amazing Beta, brother and friend. We can't express our sympathies enough to the friends and family of Jonathan Krueger. Jonathan was an active Beta during his tenure in the Epsilon Omicron Chapter and had a way of putting a smile on everyone's face, every single day. Jonathan could be found pursuing his dreams outside of Beta on the sidelines of a number of University of Kentucky sports. His passion for photography and athletics was great; his love for people was even greater. His passing comes as an incredible loss to all who knew him and to our University as a whole. The outreach we've witnessed from this campus and community is heartwarming, a true testament to the amazing support system we have at this University. We ask that you continue to keep Jonathan's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as we celebrate his life and honor his great legacy.

A Candlelight Vigil will take place in memory of Jonathan Krueger at the Newman Center at 8pm.

“There are many things that are essential to arriving at true peace of mind, and one of the most important is faith, which cannot be acquired without prayer.” - John Wooden, Beta Theta Pi (Purdue, ‘32)

Rest in Peace, Brother ~
