'No More, Do More' message behind sexual assault awareness campaign

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- "No More, Do More" is the message behind a local campaign to raise awareness about sexual assault.

The Center for Women and Families held a joint press conference Thursday with the Kentucky Commission on Women and Verizon Wireless, to announce Denim Day.

Next Wednesday, April 29, you're encouraged to wear denim to support sexual assault survivors.

The day came about after an 18-year-old woman in Italy was raped in 1992. The Italian High Court reversed a guilty verdict, saying the victim had tight jeans on and must have taken them off herself. Women in the Italian legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans.

Survivors say rape can happen to anyone.

“I lived in a normal neighborhood, a nice house, a nice area of town. I was young and had a small child, and one morning my world changed drastically,” said Dana Lackey, a rape survivor.

Marta Miranda, Executive Director with the Center for Women and Families, says sexual assault effects our community in many ways.

Miranda says the highest incidence of sex trafficking in Louisville happens during Derby week.

“We rival Las Vegas in the number of sex trafficking cases that will be reported next week,” Miranda said.

Local organizations want to bring awareness to sexual assault and domestic violence and have teamed up to get the word out.

From now until Wednesday, you'll get a free Denim Day t-shirt when you drop off old cell phones at Verizon stores in Louisville. The phones will be refurbished and given to local domestic violence agencies or local government and law enforcement agencies to give to domestic violence survivors. If unsalvageable, they will be recycled.

In addition, the Center is holding a social media photo contest through April 29. Participants can share photos of themselves in their Denim Day outfits on social media, using the hashtag #CWFDenimDay. One winner chosen at random will receive a free $50 Visa gift card.
