LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The U.S. Bank Great Balloon Race will be happening a day early.

According to a news release from the Kentucky Derby Festival, the annual race, which was scheduled for Saturday morning, will now be held today, Friday, at 5:30 p.m.

The decision came down early Friday afternoon, and was made in response to expected severe weather.

The race will launch from Bowman Field.

"Our goal is always to get as many of our balloon events off the ground as weather allows," said George Troutman, Derby Festival's Balloonmeister, according to the news release. "The forecast for later this afternoon is too perfect for a balloon race to pass up."
