LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - University of Louisville medical students gave pediatric patients something to smile about Saturday.

Medical students who participated in the Derby Festival Marathon Saturday morning presented their award medals to sick children.

The program is called Medals for Mettle.

The medals recognize the kids' fight against cancer and blood diseases.

But the program doesn't stop there.

The medical students and children say the program can help form lasting friendships.

"We just really connect," patient Tori Trizzle said. "We are both alike. She's funny, I'm funny. We get along really well."

This is the seventh year U of L medical students have participated in the Medals for Mettle program.
