Tour de Lou weaves bikers through many Louisville neighborhoods

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Horses aren't the only ones racing in Louisville during Derby Week.

More than 1,500 people took off on their bikes Sunday from the starting line at Waterfront Park as part of Tour de Lou.

Organizers say the non-competitive race started as they saw more and more people riding their bikes downtown.

Bikers were able to choose from a 20-mile course or a 35-mile course depending on experience.

"We picked a route that kind of shows you different neighborhoods of Louisville and also capitalizes on the great Olmstead Parkways and parks that we've got," Tour De Lou Chairman Mike Sewell said.

This was the second year for the event, and with its growing popularity, organizers hope it will become a long-term event for the Kentucky Derby Festival.
