Crowds moving smoothly into Churchill Downs on Oaks Day despite tightened security

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There are some changes in the rules for what you can bring to the track.

At Gate 3, the popular infield gate, security appeared to be running smoothly on Oaks Day, despite the new "Do's" and "Dont's." Most everyone was taking the new rules in stride.

"What have you heard previously about the new Do's and Dont's as far as security?" WDRB's Lawrence Smith asked one attendee.

"Don't bring anything fun," she replied, to laughter.

"They banned selfie sticks," said another attendee. "That is a really cool thing, because, at Thunder, we had a lot of fun walking around taking pictures. It's kind of weird why they would ban something like that."

"Oh yeah, that's depressing," said another Oaks Day fan. "You always got to get a little selfie action going on."

"Don't care about that one," said a female attendee. "We're older ladies. We got by without those before that. Booze. Booze and coolers."

Security is on-hand to confiscate any contraband.

"This is all contraband stuff," said one security employee, pulling out cans of beer and bottles of alcohol. "This is just stuff that we found so far. Last year, an IV bag came in, in a guy's hat. That's why we keep checking their hats."

"Basically I just think they're taking a lot of precautions," said another Oaks fan. "You have to take precautions, so I think that's fair."

So far, all is well at the checkpoint at Gate 3 -- a good dress rehearsal for Derby Day.
