Zayat Stables' El Kabeir has scratched from the Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Trainer John Terranova notified Kentucky Racing Commission Stewards this afternoon that El Kabeir, winner of the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes, has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby.

Post positions will not change, nor will program numbers, but every horse inside of El Kabeir's No. 7 post position will shift one position to the outside.

The scratch is a bit of a break for inside starters Carpe Diem and Materiality, two colts who will want to be close to the pace and who were going to be challenged to avoid a crush toward the rail in a 20-horse field.

But it's a blow to Zayat racing, which still has Kentucky Derby favorite American Pharoah and the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Mr. Z. Ahmed Zayat said El Kabeir spent his winters in New York and seemed to thrive in the harsh winters -- and even had seemed to take on a New Yorker's personality. In an interview on Monday, the owner had a cut on his hand where the colt had bitten him.

"He's a tough, tough horse," said Justin Zayat, racing and stallion manager for Zayat Stables. "I love this horse, personally. Out of all our horses, he's my favorite. He's a very high energy colt, but he really matured from two to three. He was always on his toes as a two-year-old, but at three he seemed to realize he's a racehorse, very focused."

El Kabeir missed his morning workout and later was diagnosed with an abscess in his left front leg. He carried 30-1 odds in the morning line.
