LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The horses at Churchill Downs aren't the only ones who draw attention as festive hats, brightly colored dresses and dapper suits are always an integral part of Derby tradition.

Below the twin spires, it's about one of the only places where sport meets fashion.

“The louder the better,” said Nick Hansen.

Hats and suits can be seen around every corner but some are more visible than others.

“I thought there would be more hats like mine actually, I was kind of surprised, but I'm pleased with it and enjoy being one of a kind,” said Michelle Holsapple.

“It was such a hit yesterday that I decided to carry it over to today and rock the lady gaga look two days in a row,” said Holly Ford.

“I just love all the wild outfits,” said Scott Coseo, “Just picked one that I thought would stand out.”

Whether they are Derby rookies or veterans, they say the inspiration comes easy.

“Just pink and yellow, my favorite colors,” said Tammy Pickett.

“I like hunting and everything so I decided that my uncle brought me here and we decided we might as well do hunting,” explained Dakota Iliff.

“After last year's hat I had a big giant butterfly on it and thought well what can I think of to top that,” said Kyla Burns.

It's a common theme, wanting to up the ante year after year.

“It's getting more difficult to out due myself every year,” said Coseo.

For some, they take matters into their own hands.

“I made my hat, the dress is made,” said Pickett.

But while everyone might not have the same fashion sense, one thing is for sure, they're all there for the racing.

“Being on the front row and seeing them run past, feeling the ground shake, it's all amazing. It's been an amazing two days,” said Ford.

It's never too soon to start thinking about next year's derby style. Some people even told us they will start planning their 2016 outfits on Sunday.
