LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The developer says a new shopping center in Okolona hopes to be completed by the end of June.

Most the tenants at Jefferson Commons are open for business, with a few rental units still under construction.

The 230,000 square foot shopping center is located next to the Jefferson Mall on Outer Loop. It's the second of two Jefferson County shopping centers built by GBT Realty Corp. in the last year.

"It is a great economic boost for the area, plus it's stores people have been waiting for for a long time,” said Metro Council member Madonna Flood. She represents the Okolona neighborhood.

Stores that are already open in the complex include Academy Sports, HH Gregg, Five Below, Men's Warehouse, Michael's Arts and Crafts, Shoe Carnival, Matress Firm, Firehouse Subs, Hancock Fabrics, and Sports Clips.

Liquor Barn, Five Guys, Chick-Fil-A, Qdoba and Panera Bread are set to open in late May or early June.

"I think it shows that great things are on the horizon for the Okolona area and that things you see in the East End are willing to build in other areas of town if they get the support of the community,” said Flood.

For those shopping at the center on Wednesday, the stores and restaurants are welcome additions to the neighborhood.

“I'm pretty excited about the Shoe Carnival--instead of going all the way to Dixie,” said Kayla George of Shepherdsville who often comes to shop on the Outer Loop. “We have Kroger and Walmart, that's it.”

Tennessee-based GBT Realty is also responsible for Middletown Commons, a strip mall in East Louisville. The company says that property is 96 percent occupied, with 8,500 square feet of space still available.

Middletown Commons includes stores such as the Comfy Cow, Academy Sports, Hobby Lobby, Rack Room Shoes, and Texas Roadhouse.
