Newly-constructed ramp from I-65 north to I-64 east/I-71 north opens

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A newly-constructed ramp on Interstate 65 opened early Friday morning. It's a very visible sign of progress in the Ohio River Bridges project.

Drivers will see changes to signs directing them to the new ramp from I-65 North to I-64 East and I-71 North. Be prepared to exit earlier from I-65 just as you get out of hospital curve.

"That new ramp is just a little bit south from where the ramp currently is, and it is going to look different, it's going to feel a little different and it's an earlier decision point," said Downtown Crossing spokeswoman Mindy Peterson. "What we need drivers to do, as they are making their drive, is to be aware. Watch for the signage. They will need to get over a little bit sooner and be ready."

Peterson says more changes are planned for the weekend, when the old ramp is torn down.

"That's overnight on Saturday," Peterson said. "It should be starting at 9 at night and open by 7 on Sunday,  so no problem on Sunday for Mother's Day. You should be able to still take your mothers to brunch, take their mom where they want to take her out."

That means a small section of I-64 east will be closed during that work. During the overnight road work this weekend, traffic will be diverted to the Watterson Expressway.

More than 40 new ramps and overpasses are being built on the Kentucky side of the river, which will help untangle "Spaghetti Junction."
