'Off-the-grid' family in Breckinridge Co., Ky. lobbies for the return of their children

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A mother and father have been arrested, and their 10 kids have been taken away after the state says it didn't like the way the family was living.

The state took Joseph and Nicole Naugler's 10 kids away last week. A hearing will determine whether they can get their children back.

The family of 12 lives in Garfield, Kentucky in Breckinridge County "off the grid" in a "cabin," as Nicole calls it. She says it is 280 square feet and is open, with a metal roof, and tarps cover the walls that do not have siding.

Nicole released documents on her Facebook page, saying they are from the state. The documents say the family is living with one makeshift shed and two makeshift tents and says the children are not living in appropriate conditions

"I care about liberty," said Alan Claypool, a concerned Breckinridge County resident. "I think that government tends to overreach, and we have, as a society, want -- I want -- us to let people have choices again, and not let government decide how we make our choices."

But Nicole says "off the grid" means being self-sufficient without relying on public utilities. She says they have a generator and their children are homeschooled.

Nicole has gone on social media to tell her story and a few people who don't know her showed up in support.

"I'm just here for the rights of people," said Charlotte Nichols, a concerned Grayson County resident. "That the would have the opportunity to explain their situation, and that they would be able to at least have their children returned."

"Certainly as a society, I think we tend to believe everything we hear, and we should not believe everything we see or hear on Facebook," said Claypool. "We should investigate. I like that it's going through the court system."

Nicole was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after they took her children. Joseph was arrested for menacing after police say he was trying to get water from a well and the homeowner refused.

Police say he then told his son to get the gun and threatened the homeowner.

The Breckinridge County Sheriff says his department has received threats for acting on the court order.

The Couple is expected to appear in court Tuesday for their criminal charges.
