POLICE: Elderly man suffers life-threatening injuries after being beaten and robbed

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An elderly man was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries after police say he was beaten and robbed.

It happened on Wednesday, May 13, near the corner of Taylor Boulevard and Arcade Avenue, at 3:30 p.m.

According to an arrest report, 27-year-old Michael P. Steele took money from the elderly man and fled the scene.

Police say the elderly man caught up with Steele about a block away, got out of his car and demanded his money back. When Steele saw that "the victim was elderly and weak," he allegedly grabbed the man and hit him in the face several times.

A witness told a nearby officer what was going on and the officer chased Steele on foot briefly before arresting him. Police say Steele lied to the officer about his identity because he had outstanding warrants.

Police say a syringe was found in the back of the officer's car, and Steele admitted to using drugs.

The victim was taken to University Hospital where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. His current condition is not known.

Steele has been charged with fist degree assault, first degree robbery, second degree fleeing or evading police and possession of drug paraphernalia.
