Body of 11-year-old Tasha Jonas given police escort

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The casket carrying 11-year-old Tasha Jonas was escorted from a Vine Grove funeral home to the Louisville airport Friday morning.

Seven different local law enforcement agencies volunteered their time for the escort so that Tasha's family in Virginia can lay her to rest.

"She was a nice young lady with a very tragic end,” said Blake Proffitt, Mayor of Vine Grove.

Proffitt says it will take time for the community to accept what happened.

"Something like this will rock us for years,” said Proffitt.

Police say on Monday night, Jonas' father, 49-year-old Lt. Col. John Jonas, shot her, then turned the gun on himself in the yard outside their home on Willow Crossing Court.

Neighbors told us the single father worked at Fort Knox in the Human Resources Command and was close to retirement.

According to a Go Fund Me page a family friend started, John Jonas and Tasha's mother had been in a custody dispute for years.

They had a hearing scheduled in August.

Now that her remains are going home, Tasha's fifth grade classmates at Vine Grove Elementary are left wondering why.

Grief counselors have been at the school all week.

"The well being of our children is first and foremost and we'll continue to do what we need to do to make sure they get what they need,” said John Wright, Dir. of Public Relations at Hardin Co. School.

Tasha was in a club at school called 'girl power.'

Her friends in that group made her this poster on Friday.

"Girl power is a group that focuses on self-esteem and self-confidence in young ladies,” said Wright.

Her friends are grieving and working on other activities to help honor Tasha.

“They put together a bracelet that Tasha had picked out the beads for last month in their meeting and that little group has been hit hard by this,” said Wright.

Jonas will be buried in Virginia where her mother lives.

We're told the father and daughter had lived in Vine Grove for about three years. Police have not said anything about a possible motive.

Vine Grove Police have turned the investigation over to Kentucky State Police.
