Louisville high school signing day celebrates seniors heading to college

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Monday was college signing day in Louisville for high school seniors.

An event at the KFC Yum Center focused on 1,500 Jefferson County high school students who are taking their education to the next level.

It's part of the city's 55,000 degrees initiative.

Instead of just celebrating student athletes, leaders want to recognize all students who sign to go to college.

City leaders joined school officials offering students some advice on their next chapter.

"You're going to fail. That's the secret. Everybody does. And what you learn is how to handle failure," 55,000 Degrees executive director Mary Gwen Wheeler said. "Anyone who is successful at anything -- you ask them -- they will all tell you that they failed at something."

The goal of 55,000 Degrees is to have half of working adults in Jefferson Counties with college degrees by 2020.
