Letter written to Joe Soloman Letter written to Joe Soloman
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The beginning of a hand-written message to a veteran named Joe Soloman starts out, “With deepest respect to a very special person.”

The page-long, heartfelt letter appears inside the Tom Clancy book, Shadow Warriors: Inside the Special Forces. The sentimental tribute is from co-author, General Carl Stiner.

“It's not written as a normal just book signing. There's something special about this person in here,” J.D. Fleming told WDRB News.

As a Marine veteran himself, Fleming is touched when reading the words that were put on to paper many years ago.

Phrases like “unsung hero,” “great American patriot,” and “a special salute and thanks for selfless service… in preserving our freedom,” have moved Fleming to find the man behind the letter.

“I would want someone to do the same for me and my family, and as veterans we have to take care of each other beyond the years and the decades,” Fleming said.

Fleming purchased the book at Operation Care, a thrift store in Shelbyville, Ky., for about 50 cents. But when he opened up the war novel, he realized its true value.

Believing the veteran may have passed, he wants to return the book to the Soloman family.

“They didn't see this wonderful tribute inside. They would have never given it away otherwise,” Fleming said.

And after reading the message a number of times, the words still leave a lasting impact on a man who never met this special veteran.
