New Albany National Cemetery honors fallen veterans in Memorial Day celebration

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens of residents and veterans gathered at the New Albany National Cemetery Monday to pay their respects to the fallen.

Flags were placed on graves and a service member sung the national anthem as part of the Memorial Day celebration.

Those in attendance say it's a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.

"Looking around this national cemetery and seeing all of these tombs just humbles you," U.S. Army Sgt. Alan Miller said. "You come to the realization of just how much some people did sacrifice. And not just them, but the families, their wives, their children, their parents, their husbands."

Memorial Day has been observed since the late 1800's, but became a national holiday in 1967.
