Jeffersontown students participate in annual cardboard boat competition

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Float or sink is the major objective for a group of local students.

They are being graded on projects, using only cardboard and duct tape to construct them.

It's part of Jeffersontown High School's 17th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, which is happening Wednesday at Kentucky Kingdom.

Students are building boats out of cardboard and duct tape and then testing them out on the water.

The students are part of the school's pre-engineering and computer assisted design drafting programs. They spent months researching, planning and designing the boats.

"Most of these kids have never built a thing in their life and for them to design it. It starts out as an idea in their mind, and they take that idea and they actually end up with a physical product sitting in front of them, and then they take it out and have fun with it. That's pretty good," said teacher Victor Kustes.

The vessels are tested in time, distance and weight trials.
