LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – Even though it's the start of the NCAA tournament, it's still business as usual for the Louisville Cardinals. Their first game is Friday and just like they've done for all season for series opening games, they're going to start things off with Kyle Funkhouser on the hill.
“He's still our number one guy,” said pitching coach Roger Williams. “We still have total confidence in him.”
The idea of not having total confidence in Funkhouser seems crazy when you think he's only one year removed from a school record 13 win season. But this year has been less than stellar for the right handed junior. He's gone 7-5 in 15 games this season with a 3.29 ERA. He comes into Friday's game against Morehead State having lost three of his last four decisions.
“Everyone faces adversity once in a while,” said Williams. “He's facing it for the first time in his career."
Williams agrees Funkhouser has been off but says he is confident his pitcher will be good to go Friday night.
“You to pitch to the identity of what has made you who you are and (for him) it's been a power right handed pitcher,” said Williams.
Game time is scheduled for 6:00 Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
