LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kroger has teamed up with LMPD to put a new four-legged officer on the streets.

The Kroger Company donated $5,000 toward the purchase of a new K-9 -- a Belgian Malinois from the Netherlands.

The breed is chosen for its intelligence.

"These four-legged creatures are not just dogs," said Barry Denton, director of the LMPD Foundation. "They're our officers, they put themselves in harm's way just like our officers. This dog alone will save countless lives and make a difference in our community, and without Kroger, we would not have this beautiful animal."

Kroger customers will get to name the dog in a three-day social media contest that will take place on Kroger's Facebook page starting Monday afternoon.

The winner will receive Kroger gift cards.
