LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With less than a week before graduation, the principal at the Academy @ Shawnee is taking time off to deal with a personal matter.

Houston Barber, who has been the principal at Shawnee since January 2014, told WDRB News on Friday that he has been out on personal leave since Tuesday and is not sure when he will return.

"It's a private matter involving my family," he said. "I'm hoping to return as soon as possible."

Officials with Jefferson County Public Schools did not respond to questions asked about Barber's leave of absence, but it appears the school's three assistant principals -- Amber Jaggers, Tyler Shearon and Jaronda Majors -- are leading the school while Barber is away.

Barber was previously the principal at Fern Creek High School from 2007 through 2013. JCPS Superintendent Donna Hargens selected Barber to lead Shawnee after the school's previous principal, Keith Look, resigned to take another job in July 2013.

Shawnee is one of Jefferson County's lowest achieving schools and has been in the midst of a turnaround effort.

Barber's annual salary as principal is $132,955.

Hargens could not be reached for comment on Friday.
