LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have made an arrest in connection with the murder of a woman in May of 2014.

Police say 29-year-old Deandre McElroy shot 21-year-old Donesha McStoots twice, and poured acid on her. "It was a dangerous enough of a cleaner, it's one of the ones they sell with a plastic bag over it because that's how dangerous it is to get on your hands or anything else," said Captain Mike Murdoch with the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

McStoots was still alive when the acid was poured on her. Police believe McElroy was trying to cover his tracks. He is a convicted felon whose DNA was already in the system. "I believe that he poured the acid on her in an attempt to burn off the DNA or to damage it so it couldn't be tested. Thankfully, we were able to test the DNA," Murdoch explained.

McStoots was found clinging to life near the Knob Creek Gun Range. She later died at the hospital.

As for Deandre McElroy, police say they knew about him from the beginning. "We've known his name from about 2 days in on the murder, so he's been a suspect since that day."

Detectives tried to talk to him early on at his home. "I don't know if he was there or not, but we did not receive a real warm reception to even go to talk to him about it which of course draws red flags," said Murdoch.

To add to their case, detectives say McElroy's phone records show he was at the murder scene before and after the shooting. Facebook records also add strength to their investigation.

It is not clear why the two were in the area, though. "To their exact relationship, I can't say for sure but we've heard stories from everything from a dating type relationship, to potentially her selling drugs on his behalf," said Murdoch.

The Bullitt County Sheriff's Department got a warrant for his arrest this week. LMPD's viper unit arrested him Thursday morning at the Liberty Green Housing Complex in downtown Louisville. "I don't say it's a happy day but it's a relief that he won't be out potentially doing this to someone else," said Murdoch.

McElroy is charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. He will have a Probable Cause hearing within the next 10 days at the Bullitt County Courthouse.

McElroy remains jailed at the Bullitt County Detention Center.
