Unique body-positive photo series features Louisville's Derby City Roller Girls

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three years ago, photographer Cory Layman heard some roller derby skaters talking badly about their bodies. It was a moment that inspired him to begin a project to help them build their self-confidence. Since then, he has photographed 25 teams from Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana and, now, Louisville.

The photographer, based in Jasper, Indiana, took pictures of nineteen members of the Derby City Roller Girls in March for his latest series project centered around roller derby.

“I just kind of took ‘Body by Derby' as a way of showing derby skaters what real amateur skaters look like,” said Layman.

DCRG was the last group of the series. Cassandra Waddell, who goes by the name SlingHer Kyle, was the final skater to be photographed by Layman.

“At first I was thinking I can't believe I'm doing this because I'm currently at the heaviest weight I've ever been and body acceptance has always been really hard for me,”said Waddell.

The photos show skaters in simple clothing with their skates on. Layman says the editing is very minimal and the shoot was an ‘emotional' day.

“I think this was an eye opening experience for a lot of us because a lot of our teammates have a lot of positive things to say about each other, but they may not have the same positiveness when they think about themselves,” she said.

Layman says that's the message he hopes the project sends to skaters and non-skaters alike.

“I hope they can look and find people similar to themselves because it's so much easier to see the beauty in someone else than it is in yourself,” said Layman.
