Louisville Public Library begins 10-week summer reading program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Classes will soon be dismissed, but Louisville's Public Library wants to make sure kids are still learning.

The library kicked off its summer reading event Saturday.

The free 10-week program officially starts June 1.

The goal is to get kids to read at least 10 books or have someone read that many to them.

"Just like anything else you want to do well, you have to practice," Summer Reading Coordinator Tracy Thomas said. And we want kids to practice reading in the summer."

For the first time this year, the library is reaching out to preschoolers and their caregivers.

Those who complete the program will get a backpack, along with passes to local attractions like the Kentucky Science Center and Frazier Museum.
