LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Ford Motor Co. will add an extra week of production this summer at multiple plants, including Louisville Assembly Plant, because of strong demand for its vehicles.

Ford's plants normally shut down for two weeks in the summer for maintenance and retooling, but this year the Louisville Assembly Plant will be idled only for the week of June 29, the company said Tuesday. The reduction in shutdown time is to keep up with customer demand, officials say.

The Kentucky Truck Plant will be shut down for the full two-week period, according to company officials.

Louisville Assembly Plant, on Fern Valley Road, produces the Escape and Lincoln MKC SUVs. Kentucky Truck Plant, in eastern Jefferson County, produces the F-Series Super Duty trucks, the Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator.

The plants employ a total of about 9,000 people. Workers will get another paid week off to use at their choosing to compensate for having to work the second week of the traditional summer shutdown, Ford spokesman Judd Templin said.

NOTE: This story has been updated to change incorrect information from Ford regarding the summer shutdown at Kentucky Truck Plant.
