Woman arrested after St. Matthews Police officer stuck with needle
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A woman is facing charges after police say an officer was stuck with a needle. They searched her car, with her permission. Police say an officer was struck with a needle while searching the that's when an officer was stuck with a needle that was in the back seat.
According to an arrest report, Olivia Bunton's careless behavior with the needle created a risk for officers.
"With the rise of intravenous drug use, law enforcement is coming into contact with folks that are in possession of these needles more and more," Dennis McDonald, the St. Matthews Police Spokesman said.
On Tuesday night at a Speedway on Westport Road in St. Matthews, police an officer was searching Bunton's car wearing latex gloves when he was stuck with a needle in the hand.
"It was a needle that had been used, so that's certainly something that is concerning to us," McDonald said. "What was in that needle... it's going to be tested. We're trying to determine the substance that was inside the needle and those kinds of things."
Bunton was arrested for DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia, but is now also charged with wanton endangerment of a police officer.
Police say she admitted to using heroin just before driving up to the gas station.
Police believe this is at least the second time in six months that a St. Matthews officer was stuck by a needle.
"They are being careless," McDonald said. "What we would ask them to do is take some responsibility. Dispose of those needles in a proper way. There are ways to dispose of those needles. There are hospitals and clinics and those kinds of places that have sharps containers that those needles can be disposed in."
The officer remains on the job, but will have to undergo blood testing and other medical procedures.
"His family is going to have to deal with that and they're going to be dealing with their own stress as well," McDonald said.
For confidentiality reasons, the officer's name has not been released.
