UPDATE: Coroner identifies man who was found engulfed in flames in west Louisville

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police were called to Elliott Avenue in west Louisville long before the sun came up Sunday morning.

They say 49-year-old Edward Vinson had been beaten and set on fire.

He was pronounced dead on scene just before 5 a.m.

“We called him Eddie,” said Derrick Spaulding, one of the victim's friends who lives nearby.

Neighbors are shocked by the news.

The victim lived just a few doors down from where he was killed in the 2400 block of Elliott Ave.

Derrick Spaulding says Vinson was the kind of neighbor everyone would call for help.

"Eddie would go to the store for you, Eddie would clean up your yard for you,” said Spaulding.

Spaulding says Ed Vinson had no enemies.

“He was just such a nice guy. That's what's freaking everybody out,” he told WDRB.

Detectives are just starting their investigation.

So far, they have no suspects.

"We are receiving information from the neighborhood and we're starting to work through leads,” said Lt. Todd Kessinger, LMPD Homicide.

Lt. Kessinger with says they're still figuring out exactly how Vinson died.

"It was actually a combination of the fire and blunt force trauma and we're going to go back and meet with the medical examiner to get a better clarification of what exactly took place,” he explained.

All the mystery surrounding the 49-year-old's death leaves his neighborhood uneasy.

"It scares me to live around here knowing somebody took this man's life could take my life. I want to see whoever did this get caught. They took a good friend away from me and a good man to the neighborhood,” said Spaulding.

A candlelight vigil is planned for the victim in the 2400 block of Elliott Avenue Tuesday night at 6:30. If you know anything about the crime you're asked to call the LMPD tip line at 574-LMPD.
