LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man has been arrested after police say a 3-year-old girl he was responsible for was left alone in a hot vehicle.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at Waterfront Park, according to an arrest citation.

Police say an officer was at a parking lot by the Big Four Bridge when a woman approached and said she had spotted a child who had been left alone in a gold Nissan SUV.

An officer found the vehicle and allegedly saw a small child in the car with the windows up and the doors locked. According to the arrest citation, the officer asked the little girl to unlock the door, and she did.

"The child was soaking wet and asked for water," police say, and the temperature inside the car was 99 degrees.

EMS was called and the officer was able to give the child some water.

At that point, police say the child's caretaker, 28-year-old William Tolbert, approached. Police say that they told him to sit down, but he refused. They then told him to put his hands behind his back, and he again refused, according to the arrest citation. Police say they had to use a taser twice and take Tolbert to the ground before he would comply.

Tolbert was arrested and charged with first degree wanton endangerment, resisting arrest and second degree disorderly conduct, according to the arrest citation.

Police say the child was released to her mother.
