Louisville, KY (WDRB) – Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino is signing a deal that will keep him under contract until the 2025-26 season.
That contract was unveiled Tuesday. Pitino had seven years on his previous contract. The extension adds four seasons to that with a raise from nearly $4.5 million this coming season to nearly $5.1 million every season after that. The value of the contract is more than $50 million.
Pitino says the contract talks with U of L Athletic Director Tom Jurich began about six weeks ago.
“I said, ‘Tom, honestly do you think I will live that long?',” the 62-year-old Pitino joked during a news conference at the Yum! Center Practice Facility.
“That 62 is just a number,” said Jurich. “There's no doubt in my mind…he is a much better coach, he's a much better person, he's much better with the players than he's ever been in his career. I think he's just reaching his peak.”
Jurich says the contract extension times out to the same end date of Jurich's current contract.
“I thought that would be a great time for us to go out together,” said Jurich
Pitino will coach the Puerto Rican National Team this summer before beginning his 15th year as head coach of the Cardinals
