LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police arrested a man after a brief pursuit on Tuesday.

It started just before 3 p.m., when police received reports of shots from a shotgun near the corner of 7th Street and Algonquin Parkway.

When officers arrived, they allegedly saw 18-year-old Quashawn Thomas leaving the Thorntons parking lot on a moped, holding what officers believed to be a gun under his shirt. According to an arrest citation, Thomas quickly drove southbound on 7th Street in a reckless manner as soon as he saw the officers, "swerving around other motorists and placing himself and others in harm's way."

Police say they lost sight of Thomas, but found him a short time later on Algonquin Parkway, where they discovered a moped flipped over, and Thomas laying in the grass.

When Thomas made eye contact with the officers, police say he took off running. Police say they chased Thomas over several fences and across multiple private properties. At one point during the chase, police say Thomas pulled a shotgun from his shirt and threw it into a backyard.

Thomas was eventually arrested, and officers recovered a sawed-off shotgun that they believe he threw to the ground.

As he was being checked out by EMS, Thomas allegedly made gang signs to the officers and said that he was a member of "The Gang," adding that "his gang would take care of him." Police say he asked when he was getting his gun back, but it had been confiscated by an ATF agent.

Thomas was arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, criminal mischief, reckless driving, criminal trespassing, fleeing and evading police and disorderly conduct.
