LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville company hired by General Electric in April to clean up damage after the massive fire at Appliance Park says in a lawsuit that GE refused to pay the $823,213 bill.

Hunter & Associates Construction Co., which does business under the name Purofirst Disaster Service, says it was hired on April 7 to perform smoke remediation services at Building 5 at Appliance Park, where GE makes french door refrigerators with bottom freezers.

The April 3 fire destroyed Building 6 -- a warehouse leased by Derby Industries to store parts used by GE in manufacturing – and rendered the adjacent Building 5 unusable because of soot and smoke, according to the lawsuit, filed June 4 in Jefferson Circuit Court.

GE spokeswoman Kim Freeman acknowledged that GE hired Purofirst, but said the companies disagree on the bill.

“After performing clean-up work, Purofirst demanded more than agreed. Regrettably, Purofirst abruptly sued GE,” Freeman said in an emailed statement. “GE will not accept Purofirst's practices and intend to vigorously oppose its lawsuit."

Purofirst's lawsuit says it worked for about three weeks in Building 5 by setting up and monitoring an air filtration system and cleaning fans. GE offered to pay only about $448,000 of the $823,213 bill, a short-changing that would have been “catastrophic” to Purofirst, the lawsuit claims.

The bill was calculated based on the actual cost of performing the work plus a 21 percent markup for Purofirst, according to the lawsuit.
