LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police announced several awards for honorable officers Thursday, including the prestigious Governor's Medal of Valor.

The Governor's Medal of Valor was presented to the family of Dalano G. Powell, a KSP trooper killed in the line of duty in 1965. Powell was attempting to serve a warrant in Breathitt County.

Only 18 Kentucky State Troopers have been awarded the medal since 1973 at the governor's discretion.

Governor Steve Beshear could not present the award himself.

"It is no small decision for the men and women who choose this duty to go out in the world each day to face violence, abuse, hatred, evil, greed and fear in pursuit of the public good," he said in a statement. "It's that selfless commitment to serve, to the point of sacrificing his own life, that we honor and recognize today."

KSP honored several officers, including the following awards:

  • 2014 Trooper of the Year Senior Trooper Brandon G. Burton
  • 2014 Detective of the Year Detective Brett S. Miller
  • 2014 Jason Cammack Officer of the Year Officer Erik K. Stallsworth
  • 2014 Facilities Security Officer of the Year Officer Donald D. Saltzman
  • KSP Citation for Bravery CVE Officer Jared F. Newberry and Sergeant Jeffrey M. Ayers
