LMPD: Louisville man arrested after breaking into car, leaving cell phone behind

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say they tracked down a suspect wanted in several car break-ins and thefts after he left his cell phone behind.

Michael Bailey is accused of breaking into at least three vehicles in early May. On May 1, police say he stole a wallet and cell phone from a vehicle in Cherokee Park.

According to the arrest warrant, that's where Bailey, 46, broke out the window of a car to gain entry. Once inside, he took the victim's wallet, which contained cash and credit cards as well as the victim's cell phone.

But police say Bailey left his own cell phone in the car. When the victim found it, he called one of the contacts in the phone and learned it belonged to Bailey.

In another incident on May 3, police say Bailey broke into a car through its sunroof in Beckley Creek Park. He opened the trunk from the inside and stole the victim's cash and credit cards. Police say the credit cards were used at two gas stations.

Bailey is also facing numerous charges in connection with another incident at the Goodwill in east Louisville on May 3. According to the arrest warrant, an LMPD officer responding to a burglar alarm at Momma's BarBQue on Hurstbourne Lane noticed a man now identified as Bailey crouched down outside the Goodwill.

Bailey told the officer he worked at the business, but took off running when he was asked for his identification. Police say Bailey "jumped in his car and drove off at a high rate of speed." Police say he continued driving through fields and around businesses, "frightening several employees who were waiting to go to work."

During the chase, police say Bailey nearly hit a marked LMPD cruiser head-on. He also came close to hitting another vehicle as he ran a red light on Hurstbourne Lane.

Bailey was arrested Thursday at the Harrison County, Ind. jail where he was being held on other charges.

Bailey was booked into Metro Corrections and is now facing numerous charges, including two counts of wanton endangerment, three counts of theft by unlawful taking, three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, forgery, burglary, and fleeing or evading a police officer.

Police say Bailey has an extensive criminal history.

His bond was set at $10,000 cash.
