Victim in trench collapse identified; second victim expected to survive

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One man is dead and another man is recovering after a trench collapsed in southwest Jefferson county yesterday.

According to Deputy Coroner Larry Carroll, 19 year old Jonathon Moore from Cedar Grove, Tennessee, died from impact injuries and asphyxia.

Carroll and another man were digging a trench for a sewer at Dixie Highway and Watson Lane Thursday afternoon just before 2:30. That's when the dirt collapsed on the workers, killing one of them and injuring another.

It took hours for crews to rescue the surviving man, who was taken to University Hospital. His condition is unknown but we're told he is expected to survive.

Rescuers say pulling the second man from the trench was no easy task.

"There was a concrete slab," said PRP Assistant Fire Chief Dan Vanover. "We couldn't secure it, but we had to figure out a way to keep it from moving so it wouldn't collapse onto the patient or injure a rescuer that we were going to send in the hole."

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet is investigating.
